Prepping Your Home for Winter 🥶

🚨 With sustained low temps coming here are 2 critical tips:

1. Buy these Hard Outdoor Faucet Covers and put them over your exterior hose bibs (faucets). Most of our homes have “frost free” hose bibs which means the valve is deep in the house and supposed to be insulated, but I have had one burst inside my home. Make sure you take off garden hoses and put an insulator like the one below on. You can get them at Home Depot or Amazon.

2) Leave all cabinet doors open that are below kitchen and bathroom sinks if they are on an exterior wall. This allows the warm air from your home to keep the pipes warmer.

GENERAL TIPS

Insulate: Insulate your attic and walls, and add insulation to your attic door.
Seal: Use caulk and weather stripping to seal gaps around doors and windows.
Protect windows: Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic.
Protect pipes: Insulate exterior pipes.
Prepare your heating system: Have a professional inspect your furnace or boiler. Ensure you have enough heating fuel.
Prepare your fireplace: If you have a fireplace, keep a good supply of wood and maintain it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Prepare your water: Know how to shut off your water valves in case pipes freeze.
Prepare your emergency equipment: Have a fire extinguisher on hand, and install and check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Prepare your outdoor space: Service your snow removal equipment and have rock salt to melt ice. Prepare your landscaping and outdoor furniture.
Prepare your roof: Have a contractor check the stability of your roof.
Prepare your gutters: Clean out your gutters and downspouts.
