The Wild Horse Reservoir Project is moving forward with a key change: Aurora Water has selected the Wild Horse South Reservoir alternative for further environmental review and permitting. Announced in the Spring 2026 newsletter, this decision follows evaluation of several sites identified by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
For the latest updates, maps, recordings, and Q&A, visit the official Wild Horse Reservoir Project website.

Why Wild Horse South Was Chosen. Aurora Water determined that this location offers several advantages:
- One dam instead of three
- Lower construction and operational risks
- No additional pumping required to fill the reservoir
- Minimal wetland impacts
It also allows use of existing Park County quarries, supporting local businesses and reducing new land disturbance. This shift reflects a thoughtful balance between water supply needs and environmental responsibility.
Impact on Property Owners. The new site will affect some private properties in Park County. Aurora Water emphasizes that property is personal and commits to treating affected owners with respect, fairness, and transparency. I am not sure all of those owners agree just yet. Aurora Water says that they are partnering with owners to find flexible solutions. If your property is impacted, email Wi****************@*******ov.org with your Park County Assessor parcel number or address for personalized information.

Next Steps and Timeline. The project now advances through detailed environmental reviews and permitting with federal, state, and local agencies. A virtual update recording from February 25, 2026, and Q&A from presentations are available on the project website. A new map overlaying road names has also been added for clarity.
